Vernal Main Street Drainage Project

U.S. 40; Vernal Main Street Drainage Improvement Project

UDOT Construction Update: March 5, 2021

Work on the Vernal Main Street Drainage Improvement Project has resumed. Crews are finishing work in Section 1 from 400 West to Vernal Avenue and will begin work in Section 2 and 3.

Section 1 – 400 West to Vernal Avenue

  • Crews are installing the remaining cleanout culverts along U.S. 40 (Vernal Main Street) between 400 West and Vernal Avenue. As crews continue along Vernal Main Street, eastbound traffic will be restricted to one lane and shifted toward the median to accommodate work activities. Right and left turns for eastbound traffic will be restricted at intersections where active work is underway.

Section 2 – Vernal Avenue Intersection

  • The week of March 15th, crews are scheduled to begin storm drain and concrete replacement work at the U.S. 40 (Vernal Main Street) and Vernal Avenue intersection. While work is underway, eastbound traffic will be restricted to one-lane and shifted to the median. Motorists should expect right and left turn restrictions with possible closures of the north and south legs of the intersection. This work is anticipated to take one-month to complete.

Section 3 – Vernal Avenue to 500 East

  • Rotomilling in preparation for excavation and storm drain installation is underway along Vernal Main Street from Vernal Avenue to 500 East.
  • Crews are scheduled to begin installing the new storm drain pipe the week of March 8th. To accommodate work, eastbound traffic will be narrowed to one-lane with possible lane shifting. Please plan for extra travel time when driving through the area.
  • On-street parking on the south side of U.S. 40 (Vernal Main Street) will be restricted while work is underway. Business driveway access and side streets will remain open. Crews will fill trenches with gravel or cover with a metal plate to maintain accessibility.

In each section, most work will occur Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. Nearby businesses and residents should expect open trenches and use caution while travelling in the area. Business access will be maintained. No water service or utility interruptions are anticipated.

Project Background

On September 14, 2020, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) started phase II of the U.S. 40; Vernal Main Street Drainage Improvement Project. The first phase, which installed a storm drain bypass at 600 West and Main Street (U.S. 40), was completed summer 2020. Phase II includes the installation of a new storm drain under Main Street between 400 West and 500 East and will be completed in three sections over 10 months. Work is anticipated to be complete Summer 2021.

The new storm drain will help increase the system’s capacity and reduce the occurrence and severity of flooding in downtown Vernal.
